FOM Hochschule für Oekonomie & Management
The FOM at a Glance
The FOM University of Applied Sciences was founded in 1993 by the Essen Employer's Association, the Essen Retail Association, the Essen Association of Wholesale and Foreign Trade and by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Essen, Mülheim, Oberhausen. These institutions represent important enterprises in energy supply, retail and services, chemical and glass production and the metal and electrical industries; the member companies reflect the entire economic spectrum of the area, from the medium-sized private company to the global player.
The FOM offers the possibility of studying at a university while holding a full-time job. Students are able to continue and to strengthen their company career and at the same time acquire a German or international university degree. A particular strength of the FOM is that our teaching staff is composed both of university lecturers with a strong practical orientation and business practitioners with managerial experience and an affinity for teaching. In total, the FOM employs about 150 university professors, 40 of them on a full-time basis, and more than 500 visiting lecturers. The FOM is located in 17 cities in Germany: Berlin, Bremen, Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt, Gütersloh, Hamburg, Cologne, Leverkusen, Marl, Munich, Nuremberg, Neuss, Siegen and Stuttgart. The headquarters are located in Essen. FOM has become one of the biggest private universities in Germany. All the academic degrees awarded are of course officially recognised and accredited by the government.
Some of the most important companies, e.g. Siemens, Bayer and Bertelsmann, have integrated FOM courses into their high potential development programmes. Close relations to business community are underlined by the fact that many FOM students hold managerial positions.
Lectures are held in the evenings or at weekends so that in general there is no overlap with working hours. Additionally, the seminars are supplemented by the use of new media such as the internet ( via online campus). The major advantage of the FOM is that the studies are very practice-oriented. Students improve their soft skills such as presentation techniques, teamwork and time management whilst gaining academic knowledge that can be directly applied in their everyday work. Students also profit from the exchange with other students, who are professionals and graduates too.
