The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, was founded by the Swiss government in 1854 as a polytechnic and opened its doors in Zurich in 1855. Today it is part of the ETH domain which is made up of the two national universities in Zurich and Lausanne (the EPFL) and four national research institutes.
Ranking
ETH Zurich is constantly ranked among the 5 top universities in Europe and among the top 40 world wide. The ETH Zurich has association with 21 Nobel Prize winners, who at the time of their awards were engaged as professors at the ETH Zurich, or had studied or researched there, and who received the Nobel Prize in recognition of their exceptionell performance. A further 16 Swiss personalities and institutions have been honoured with a Nobel Prize.
Size
The ETH itself comprises almost 100 institutes and laboratories, more than 350 professorships and about 850 lecturers who fulfill teaching obligations and conduct research programs. A staff of more than 7,500 work in teaching, research and administration. Current statistics of the ETH show about 12,000 registered students.
Each year about 2400 students receive a degree from ETH and a further approx 600 scientists achieve a PhD degree. Current annual expenditure has exceeded one billion Swiss francs.
